About Us

Welcome to the Decision Theater blog, a place where we feature ideas, events and commentary about decision-making.

We all have Light Bulb Moments (LBM’s). A brilliant insight sparked off by a serendipitous event or a layout that crosses our desk. Watson and Crick had an LBM when they envisioned the DNA molecule as a ‘twisted ladder.’  Thomas Edison, might be considered the father of the LBM, with his invention!

Who knows where yours might take place?

Contrary to popular belief, LBM’s don’t happen in an instant –they happen over time. New thinking emerges during a ‘creative pause,’ often catalyzed by certain events and processes. They happen in a collaborative space when we ping each other’s brains, look at a problem with a different perspective, through a different lens.

There are three reasons for this blog.

The first purpose is very personal. As the Communication Manager at the Decision Theater, I come across many of these Light Bulb Moments. People come here with complex, fascinating public policy challenges. They bring their teams when they need to break out of the same old, same old; to arrive at their own light bulb moments. This is where I document how they  ‘see things differently.’

The second purpose of this blog is to apply the microscope to projects we are currently working on. To zoom right in and give you the inside scoop through short interviews, podcasts, video, raw images and photographs. You’ll hear from those behind the scenes on how they approach a complex topic.

The third purpose is to use our insights to pull back and look at some of the leading ideas swirling around sustainable business practices, visualization, and decision making. The view through the telescopic lens to put things in context.

The Decision Theater is part of the Global Institute of Sustainability, which is the home of the nation’s first School of Sustainability at Arizona State University. More information about our projects and people could be found here: www.decisiontheater.org
